Bad designs don't last for 50 plus years! You can buy a new fan assembly complete with ball bearing for around $100. However, it won't last 50 years as it will have a "lifetime" lubricated ball bearing. I think the reasons for most of the failures on the original design are 1) failure to maintain the bearing by checking the oil in it and refreshing the oil on occasion and 2) too much tension on the fan belt, putting excessive load on the bearing. Belt should only be tightened per the manual and that is not real tight.
