Regular steering gears

The exposed steering gear on my Regular has been broken and welded back together. It broke in two places along what looks like a casting seam. Is this typical? Are new (used) steering gears available?
The part I'm talking about is the flat toothed part that the gear on the steering shaft meshes into.
