It is VERY advisable to polarize before starting, but there's PROBABLY better than a 50% chance you didn't hurt anything by starting it.

I assume you have the battery connected up in the original POSITIVE GROUND manner?

To polarize, with the engine OFF, momentarily jumper the terminal at the regulator that has battery power to it (typically labelled "BATT") to the regulator terminal labelled "A" (or GEN) that connects to the "A" terminal on the generator.
