Ken, in addition to the other advice you've gotten here, try using a battery jumper cable to bypass the ground to the starter mounting bolt. You said your ground cable was still connected to the side of the battery box. The boxes are real bad to rust and corrode arond the bolts holding them to the floor and loose connection.
