take out the plugs, roll over the motor and set the valves on each cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke, ( put finger over plug hole and feel for compression) ....remember what we learned in shop class for a 4 cylce engine 1. INTAKE STROKE (intake valve opens as piston goes down) 2. COMPRESSION STROKE ( both valves are closed and piston moves up to compress air gas mixture)..set the valves at TDC on this stroke 3. POWER STROKE ( spark ignites gases and piston is forced down) 4. EXHAUST STROKE ( after firing, the piston is forced down ,at BTC (bottom dead center) exhaust valve opens , piston moves up and pushes out burnt gases) piston is at TDC again , but we don't set the valves on this stoke because the intake valve is already starting to open and begining the 4 cylces all over again

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
