Harold, I responded to the original post and gave the HP differences, someone answered me and said essentially the same thing you did about the rpm. It would make sense that lower rpm equates to longer engine life. However, I've always thought that IH built the 300 to compete with the Ford and Ferguson, which were always "utilities" (at least until they began to build higher profile tractors, don't remember when that began), and that many farmers used them for tillage. I grew up in vegetable country, and a Ford or Ferguson pulling a plow was common. I left the farm to go to college about that time, so I did not see many 300U's. I have had no personal experience with the 300, so I could be wrong.
