Check the casting mumbers in the form of Month*Day*Year. Month and day are numbers, year is a letter, either Y for 1953, Z for 1954. If it has the battery under the seat, hyd resevoir under the gas tank, and a pump in front of the distributer, it is a Stage 2, built from about Oct 1953, thru the end of production in 1954. Otherwise it is a Stage 1. You can get pretty close to the assembly date, but there is no longer any way to tell the exact serial with no tag. Please do not use the engine serial as the chassis serial. They do NOT match.
