Farmall 350 Hydraulic Problems

I was at my grandpa's farm yesterday and we were working on getting his 350 running, because it had been sitting for a few years with no use. We pull started it and it ran fine, but there is a loud whining/grinding noise coming from the hyraulic system and the lines were quite warm to the touch. Is the system probably just low on fluid or is there a more serious problem here? How do you check how much fluid is in the reservoir? I removed the filler cap and there is no dipstick, just a long, dark tube that I can't see anything in. Thanks in advance for the advice,
