Matt: From the way you stated your problem and ask the question you did not look for the answer in the shop manual. If you don't have one get one. They cost about $30.00, available at most farm/tractor supply centers. The second thing you need to get for your tractor is a parts manual. I am a retired shop instructor. Taught auto mechanics (tractors in rural areas) at the highschool and junior college level. If a student has asked about the timing marks I would have pointed them in the direction of the shop manuals. Do the compression test. I'm betting the valve tappets are to tight.
