Tim - Sounds like the transmission is caught in 2 gears at once (like R and 2, etc). It's fairly common on these tractors when the end of the shift lever gets worn down.

Can verify by putting the shifter in neutral, knocking out the pivot pin in the tower where the shift lever enters the tranny cover, then pulling the shift lever out. Peek inside at the 3 shift rails. The slots in all 3 should be centered fore and aft in the opening. If two slots are ahead or behind center, take a big screwdriver and click them them back into the center position. (Sometimes helps to jack up one rear wheel and rock it a bit when you do this...) When all 3 rail slots are centered the rear wheels should then turn freely.
