It's pretty straight forward Don. Here how I do it:

1 - Set the crank to TDC #1 cylinder firing: Remove the front spark plug. Put your thumb over the plug hole then slowly turn the crankshaft until you feel air pressure. Keep turning the crank until the 1st notch in the front pulley is in register with the pointer on the gear cover.

2 - Set the distributor so the rotor is under the #1 plug wire tower on the distributor cap. (I find it helps to mark the rotor location on the outside of the distributor housing with a black marker.)

3 - Carefully mount the distributor onto the engine without letting the rotor turn. If you did it right once the distributor is seated it the rotor will still be directly under the #1 wire tower.

4 - Lightly clamp the distributor down. If you have a timing light you can start the motor and set the timing to TDC at idle. Otherwise you can set it pretty close by ear by turning the distributor slightly in both directions with the motor running. Clamp it down where the engine runs fastest at idle.
