Don't try to get a wrench on the nut on the back side of the bracket. You will just make a mess. Loosen the shaft by putting a wrench on the hex on the front side of the bracket. Thats between the hub and the bracket. Make sure you use an open end wrench of the correct size (not a crescent wrench) so as not to round off the hex on the shaft. The nut on the back side is in a slot that keeps it from turning. Should only take about a half turn of the shaft to make things loose enough for the fan assembly to drop down.
