I'm about to pull the connecting rods on my 1020 and from what I've been able to determine from the overhaul manual and from posts here are:
1) when removing the connecting rod bearings count the shims on each side of the rod and keep them in stacks by rod number and side of rod
2) when re-installing the bearings start with the same shims on each rod and side
3) when tightened the rod should be able to move slightly from side to side with light hammer strikes
4) adjust by adding/removing shims one at a time from each side until desired slack is achieved
I haven't actually done mine yet so can't say this is correct. And I'm also assuming the Regular engine is very close to the 1020. I haven't found anything concerning torque specs on the 1020. For head bolts I'm assuming one manpower of maximum torque with a 1/2" drive socket and 12" extension using a cross-pattern tightening approach.
I'll be watching your post for tips from those much more knowledgeable.
