My M is set up that way, don't know where the switch came from, it was there when I bought the tractor, and is mounted in the headlight bar, I really don't like it there. I think your idea is better, or, what about mounting it in the ammeter box? That way all of the wiring would be concealed as well as out of the weather. Check with NAPA, Car Quest, or similar for the switch, maybe even your Case-IH dealer, it shouldn't matter whether it is 6 or 12 volt.
