Carburetor Rebuild Kits

I recently rebuilt the carb on my 400 with a rebuild kit that contains gaskets and many new parts. The new throttle plate shaft has a plastic slotted piece that engages the governor linkage. This plastic piece broke, which allowed the plate to open all of the way and the engine was screaming at perhaps 3000 rpm. I would like to re-use the old shaft which has the brass slotted part, but I did not keep it.

Has anyone else had problems with the plastic part breaking? What would cause it to break?
