8 Volt Battery

A friend of mine went from a 6 volt battery to an 8 volt battery on his "H" and now can't get it to charge. We put a metter on the battery, with out the tractor running and it showed +8 volts and with the tractor running (full throttle)was about the same at +8 volts. The amp metter on the tractor goes from discharge (low idle) to about the center of the gage between charge and discharge at full throttle. Is there anything that can be done to get more volts out of the generator or do we need to adjust the regulator some how? I also checked out our "M" which has an 8 volt battery in it and it shows +9 volts with tractor running. We installed the 8 volt battery several years ago and had no trouble when we switched from a 6 to and 8 volt battery. Thanks for your help in advance.
