It is possible to bend the spring but it needs to be done with the spring in place which gets a little tricky, but it can be done. Another thing to look for are the holes that the spring hooks into. These holes get worn and some what egged out. The best way I have found to remedy this is to braze or weld the holes shut and then redrill them, you can even drill the new hole a little further back from the original, this will help to get the tension on the spring where you want it. You will want to disassemble the gov. before doing any welding.
