Jim Becker's got it right. That gray stuff is left over from the days of leaded gas and non-detergent oil - no doubt what your tractor saw over most of it's working life. Leaded gas leaves a grayish powdery residue when burned. Some of the residue gets by the rings and into the crankcase. But non-detergent oil will not keep the residue in suspension so it gradually accumulates in the bottom of the pan. The stuff is the color of and has about the same consistancy as window putty. Fortunately it's NOT a sign of metal wear, internal coolant leakage, etc!
