Hi Bob, if the 454D is out of time it will be hard to start. If it is timed to slow you will have to crank the engine several times with the starter before it starts. Also it will blow a lot of smoke and a sooty oily compound will collect in the muffler. If it is timed to fast it will kick back on the starter when you attempt to start the engine. I can give you two methods of timing it, one by the book and the other by sight and sound. P.S. If the engine was recently overhauled, new rings, sleeves honed it will take about 25 hrs. of working the engine before it will run correctly. The other common occurrance with this engine is a broken piston ring but usually happens with the first year of life. A broken ring causes oil consumption if it is oil ring or loss of compression if one of the other rings. Loss of compression will cause smoking, rough idle lack of power. Do an archive search on Klanger for his 454 story. Keep us posted. JB
