Last week I was mowing with my SA and noticed I had a problem similar to what you describe. I thought right away like parts man that collar and spline are worn. Upon closer inspection I discovered the small pin the holds the pto engage lever in the engage shaft had sheared, allowing the lever to slip down through shaft about 1", thus the lower end was hitting housing and not allowing it to fully engage. I pulled the lever up in place, and that solved the problem. I just throw this in so you will not overlook the possible simple and easy fix.
