It uses a Hall effect magnetic pick up, there is a magnet rotor that slips over your existing distributor shaft, and the pick up is on the points plate. I would say that if the bushings are worn out, so is the mechanical advance unit. And should be replaced, but if you are talking about where the points made contact with the shaft, then no, no trouble, sisde to side play,, ehhhh,,,, might find another one,,, or replace the bushings,, ChadS
