Dan – Problem could be as simple as the breaker point gap set too close. If you haven’t already, pop open the distributor and reset the points to 0.020”. Or better yet install a new set of points. If that doesn’t help the problem could be the distributor needs a rebuild as you suggest (worn bearings, stuck or broken centrifugal advance, etc). Another, long shot possibility: A sheared camshaft drive gear key or broken cam gear hub. I’m not familiar with the timing gear setup on the C engine so it may not even be possible. However I have seen this several times on H’s and M’s equipped with live hydraulics. Depending on how much the cam gear slips the engine will still run, but will run very poorly and have no power. Only solution is to open the front of the engine and replace the failed component(s).

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
