Jon: Your mention of the Detroit diesel in a M, reminded me of a 318 Detroit in an IH 600 tractor. This guy geared it up for modified pulling. At least it started out as a 600, and still has the 600 hood and grill. The last time I saw it everything from the clutch housing back was an 86 series tractor complete with cab. He told me the last time he had it going it ran wild on him. Kill switch wouldn't work, nor would the throttle. In the end they chopped the fuel line off with an axe. They figured it reached 9,000 rpm before it stopped. He was a bit of a reble and they banned him from pulling on more than one ocasion. They finally let him back on the condition he abide by the rules. They were pulling on a harness race track. They thought they had the sled set to stop him, not so, he went right around the track, with the old guy that operated the sled yelling and screaming.
