The hardener will help prevent small, light scratches but IH did not use such a thing when they built that M many years ago so why bother with it now? Paint with hardener will still scratch, only now you will have a deep nasty sratch that is very difficult to touch up. Without the hardener all you need is a small brush and a dab of paint and you can fix that scratch so most people will never notice it.
