Single action cylinders only need one hose on the working side of the piston. The other side doesn't need oil as it only sucks or pushes air out a vent on the non-working side. You can use a single action cylinder on a dual action tractor by simply hooking up to the single hose to one side of the dual hydraulic coupler. Some tractors valve systems have a switch that allows you to change the valving for use with single or double action cylinders. If you want to use a dual action cylinder on a tractor that only has single hydraulics, you need to remove the hose on the non-working side and install a vent/filter to allow the air to enter/escape that side of the piston. Depending on the postion of the piston within the cylinder when you remove the hose, if there is a volume of oil in that side, it will be expelled the first time the cylinder compresses, after that, only air.
