Both my restored M and my now retired working M have loud trannys,my newest working M is very, very quiet. Both others are 41s and have new bearing in each tranny.(very expensive rebuilds)All the gears are good and gear oil is up to proper levels.I dont know about the 40 as far as bearings go,but the guy I got it from did nothing to the tranny, didnt even change the gear oil.I drained it,only got 4 gallons and it was yellow.Refilled it and its quieter than it was before. Why would two be loud and one older be quiet?I havent ever heard a M tranny this queit before!(When I say loud I dont mean ready to start slinging gears and stuff around, just a "normal" gear noise to me)
