Got the same tractor minus splitter. Just a hunch has I don't have that problem. Sounds like problem in the shift system. Other tractors with this problem seem to have worn shift detent balls or the socket they drop into are worn. Nothing some brazing rod couldn't fix. The rails on this tractor are all straight and by the manual seem to be not too complicated a job to fix. On most tractors you can work the rails with the shift plate off by poking in a bar and sliding the rail into the gear you want. Might be easier to see what the problem is with the cover off and an halogen flashlight. Watch for oil overspill out of the shift access hole and don't rev engine too high.
