If they are band brakes, there is a tin cover on the left side, in front of the axle housing - it would be just about under your foot when you are sitting on the seat. You will see that the left brake pedal linkage is connected to it. Remove the linkage and the half dozen or so 9/16 bolts, and the cover will come off. From there you should be able to tell what to do.

Besides a service manual (or two), you will also want to get an operator's manual and a parts book.
