I once had a 1961 ford PU with 292 V8 that smoked like a freight train. Used a quart of oil every 25 miles or so! I had a machine shop overhaul the heads and install new wrist pins in pistons, honed the cylinders and put it all back together with new rings and problemn solved. Never took the block out of the truck. I know new sleeves and pistons would be ideal, but perhaps you can fix it up for the price of head work and rings.
