I had almost the same problem with my SC. Changing the oil gauge made a big improvement but pulling the oil pan and the bottom plate from the oil pump. After I had trued the bottom plate and put on a new gasket I had good full presure all the time.

A good perfectlly flat surface is all you need with some fine grit emery paper you will be able to true the plate. The gasket is still available from CIH and it is the thinest one I have ever seen.
