That will not work. The volume changes as you change height. For that to work the tank would have to be the same cross sectional area for the entire debth. No Farmall tank I know of is. They all slope down at the back. All you really care about is when you are about empty. Just run it dry and and drop you stick in. Then you will know how much you have left. I just use a plain stick. The empty level is basically the bottom of the tank on everything I have. I just use the stick to verify when I am about empty. If you want gallon marks, then the idea of marking it as you fill it will work nicely.
