The 12 volt SM's an SMTA's had pull rods with a button right on top of the starters,it's coming back to me now. I'm not sure about the documentation of the early SM's seems to be a little foggy to everyone I think everyone is right when they say their SM was a 6 volt tractor but I never saw a 6 volt SM in early years but at tractor shows thats all I see, maybe the 12 volt ones are still working. I'm thinking IH had a history of putting one little item on their latest version before they bring out the new series ie; headlights on the 39 F20,new series link arms and brakes on 1976 66series tractors and Pioneer hydraulic couplers on the last 86 series before the 88 series. Who knows?
