Try to avoid the hammer if you can. When you pound on the pulley you impact the crank againest the main thust bearing. Clean the surfaces with emery cloth and heat and oil as others have said, the treaded rod should pull it on. If it will not go you can use a harmonic balancer installer. They have a one inch treaded shaft with thrust bearing and adapters to fit the crank treads. They will pull any pulley on.
