My 966 has an internal regulator Delco alternator on it. The plug with the two wires is rectangle shaped. Delco also makes an external regulated alternator which has a square plug on the two wires. I’m going to guess here a bit that it is the regulator that is bad, causing the overcharging condition. If you have the internal one, you will need to get a different alternator, if you have the external one, then the regulator (usually a small square black box with four wires coming out of it) will need to be replaced.
