Your friends may be right. There is absolutely no single item that will be 100%, nor is there a combination of items that is guaranteed to work every time. The least expensive thing I have tried is brake fluid and diesel fuel mixed equally. Others will tell you to use PB blaster, Kroil, even turpentine. I have tried them all. Depending on the severity of the rust, any of these solutions will work, or none of them will work. You can spend a lot of money on snake oil, or just start in drilling holes in the pistons and breaking them out of the cylinders. There is no magic cure.
