IH 504 hydraulics

I have a loader plumbed into tractor hydraulics on a 504 diesel. I've been "logging" with it, and picking up logs to stack them. Operating at about half throttle, the smaller ones are no sweat, but have to rev it up more for the bigger ones, and then its still a struggle. Then I discovered by accident that it seems to lift better at low throttle than half- so maybe its some kind of bypass, rather than the pump being weak? Any ideas?
