The question of timing pops up often so I typed this up a long time ago so all I have to do is cut'n'paste. This was for my Super A but will work for any engine with similar instructions.----- ----- If yours is a distributor& coil ignition, heres how to set the timing: Align the timing mark located on the flywheel with the mark on the housing so that #1 is at TDC. The timing mark is a line with "D-C" & "1-4" on either side. Its is very faint and may be hard to find if you flywheel is dirty. Use a flashlight and wipe off the outer part of the flywheel. You will be suprised at how tiny the mark is. Remove the spark plugs and have a helper turn the engine with a crank. Feel for compression building up on #1 plug hole and that will help you in locating timing mark. The indicator is on the housing at the very bottom. You can see all this through the hole on the bottom of the clutch housing. Once this is done, make sure the distributor's rotor is pointing toward #1 plug wire. If it's not, remove and reinstall the distributor so that it is. Now retard the timing by rotating the distributor in the same direction that the cam rotates so that the points are closed. Turn on ignition and with the hot/center wire of the coil near a ground, advance the timing by rotating the distributor back the other way slowly until the points just open and a spark occurs. (the distributor sparks when points open) Lock the distributor down there. Since the engine is a TDC and the point just opened and a spark occured, you now know your timing is exactly at 0 degrees TDC. This is the correct setting for your engine and the rest of the timing advance occurs in the distributor with the mechanical advance.
