Bob Quale: The item you are refering to is called the cam. It should not have any play, however any play you do see is more likely from the driveshaft/bushing it rides on. You should have minimum play. Excess play will afect the point gap setting. You need to check the cam for wear on the cam surface where the point lever rides. If it looks scoured or wore then get a GOOD used one at a salvage yard. As far as lube, I make sure the bore is clean of debris with a drill bit and cloth then use lubriplate(rebuilder's grease) and don't forget the felt which goes into the open end of the cam. this should be oiled regularly.
