Just a guess here, but if the tractor moves forward when it is in “third gear” it is probably either in first (left rail slid ahead) or fourth gear (right rail slid back). When you think you are in third gear, you actually have the third rail in the neutral position. There are notches in the middle of the dividers between the rails that the notches in the rails need to match up with for the shifter to move from side to side. If I remember correctly, there may also be other notches in the dividers that can be a bit confusing as to which need to be lined up.
