The number you are refering to is a part number. On the right side of the engine somewhere about behind the magneto (or distributor) is a milled flat spot on the block, just below the head, roughly two or three inches wide and about an inch high which should have the engine serial number stamped in. I believe with the B it will be a six-digit number. This is the engine serial number and should be close to the tractor serial number. Check the "Serial Number" section on the left of this screen to identify the year. Also what PG says about the casting date codes.
