Orriginal equipment on Cub?

I was working on my '51 Cub today and my dork brother (OW... he hit me,) saw what appeared to be cork plugs in the side of the bell housing. Apparantly these tapped holes were to mount equipment to. Before I could get him to stop he had pushed all four (two on either side) into the clutch housing.
My question is, were these cork plugs installed at the factory to keep the housing sealed and the threads clean or had someone just found their own way of plugging holes?
