It is actually called an over-run coupler and fits on the PTO before the drive shaft for the mower. It prevents the spinning mower from pushing the tractor. Tractors like the Farmall A use the same shaft for the PTO and the drive assembly for the transmission. A mower can push you into a ditch very quickly without one. Even if the clutch is disengaged, the mower will still turn the final drive for your rear wheels.
