One of the older Cub Cadets with solid steel frame, cast iron front axle, and hydrostat transmission will do nicely for mowing an acre. They are not to expensive and repair parts are available. Those suckers are almost bullet proof and will take a lot of abuse, unlike some of the newer mowers with formed sheetmetal frames.

You should be able to pick up a Cub Cadet for less than the price of a used bush hog or belly mounted finish mower.
