Look for the API specification that an oil is good for. API started with grade SA for gasoline engine oil, When I was a kid, it was SC then SD. Now they are up to SL as the latest requirement. If the oil meets only SG then it is an inferior oil to the best being currently produced. Similarly, diesel oils have a C designation. Shell Rotella T is currently advertising API CI-4. So if you buy a diesel oil for a gasoline engine and it says CI-4/SG, then it will be OK for diesel but a little less than the best for gasoline engines. Conversly, if you buy an oil without a "C" rating, it is inadvisable to use it in a diesel engine for an extended period of time. A modern diesel, that is. I bet an MD will do just fine on any gasoline engine oil currently produced. Farmalls were designed for SA or less grade oils. That is part of the reason they perform so well for so long now, the oils are superior to what the engine was designed to operate with.
