Others comments about grounding of relay and polarizing apply. I bet the generator is not charging because it needs to be polarized. Likely your A is positive ground and generator shops these days probably polarized it for negative ground. The A tractor charging system used a cutout relay mounted on top of the generator. If that is what you have, it is probably original. You can replace the cutout with a voltage regulator. Aftermarket regulators are available that mount on the generator just like the cutout relay. No one but you will likely notice that there is a regulator instead of the original cut out relay. The system will work better with the regulator and you don't have to worry about setting the charging rate with the switch.
