I need help rewiring a farmall H

I have a H with a magneto and all the wiring needs to be replaced. Can I still use the 6 volt genarator with a voltage regulator, but put a 12 volt battery on it? I don't have a 6 volt battery. I will hook up the 12 volt battery with the positive post grounded. Will this work? Or am I looking for trouble? I don't want to spend any more money on this tractor that I need to. Thanks for any help.
