You answered your own question,"I have seen some with remote hydraulics, and some without." I don't know if belly pump hydraulics were available on the W series, but the Super W6 could have the live hydraulic pump driven off the distributor gear, just like the Super M. W stands for Wheatland, or Western, depending on who you talk to. I think Wheatland is the official designation from IH. These tractors were designed to pull plows and tillage equipment out in the big grain fields in the midwest.
