Rauville: That W9 would have quite large torque tube so very likely the automatic transmission would fit inside and would just need a coupling device to input shaft of W9 5 speed transmission. I wouldn't get too awfully hung up on fact Buick engine could turn 5,000 rpm. Most Buicks only turned about 1750 rpm at 60 mph. He may well have a governor on the engine. It's very obvious this guy geared this up to give him a shuttle transmission as a loader tractor. It could be one of the better IH loader tractors on the market. IH gear drives were never noted as great loader tractors, they were designed for drawbar work. Of course that is what destroyed the Farmall, as the very best drawbar tractor we ever knew. All these up and coming young farmers wanting to put a loader on everything that moved.

If you rebuild the motor, you could use hardened seats and valves, and unleaded fuel. But if your old tractor runs good, a simple lead substitute added to the gas is a perfectly reasonable solution.
