I'd think you might have to change the timing cover to put the later hydraulic pump on but I wouldn't swear to that. And of course you'd have less power but you probably won't miss it. As long as the block and heads are good, I don't see why you can't just bolt in the M motor and then later on redo the SMTA's origninal motor at your own pace.
