Sounds like it's in two gears at the same time. If it's been a while since it's been in use the shift forks may have picked up some rust. Each fork has at least one spring and ball bearing that keeps downward pressure on the fork. (Called poppets) The H I just finished had the shift rear guide broken and part was in the bottom of the trans case. That let the ball bearing fall out of one of the shift forks and broke the spring. But if you haven't been in it yet, I assume you have been working on the motor. If you don't know the history of the tractor a look could prevent some serious problems. Not easy to do though. But by playing with the shift lever you should be able to get it back into neutral, then be careful when you shift from one gear to another. Don't shift from reverse to third. shift from reverse to neutral then to third and give the shifter time to lock into place. At least you can get it out of the rain. Loyd

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
